Costas Cotsiolis   32nd International Guitar Festival, Naxos 2010

Dear friends,

The International Guitar Festival, which has been hosted from 1978 to 2005 in Volos and the last 5 years in Naxos, celebrates thirty years of success.
Due to
our sole intention to preserve this success and due to the extraordinary circumstances of Greece at the time, the “Friends of Guitar” Society and me personally, as its artistic director, we have come to decide to postpone for 2011 this year’s Festival. We truly hope and believe that next year the circumstances will be different and ideal for another successful Festival.
We would like to thank you for your
interest and invite you to the 2011’s Festival, on the same dates.

The artistic director
Costas Cotsiolis

History of the festival

It began as a Panhellenic festival in 1977 and from 1978 it became International with participants from all over the world. More than 9000 students and 400 performers and music teachers have participated in it.
Until 2005 it was called the Volos International Guitar Festival, and since 2006 it has taken place on the island of Naxos as the Naxos International Guitar Festival.
It has always been a starting point for young guitarists embarking on a career, for example Aniello Desiderio, Zoran Dukic and Duo Melis (Mouzourakis- Prieto) while the last 3 years have included an important International Competition.
So far the following works for solo guitar and orchestra have been commissioned for the Festival:
1)The Volos Concerto by Leo Brouwer . It was recorded for GHA with Costas Cotsiolis and the Cordoba Chamber Orchestra, with the Composer conducting . It has been played all over the world many times.
2)The Suite for Guitar and Strings by Thanos Mikroutsikos, which was first performed at the Athens Concert Hall with Costas Cotsiolis, the Camerata Chamber Orchestra and Alexandros Myrat conducting.
3)“Hommage” or The Naxos Concerto for guitar and chamber orchestra by Theodore Antoniou, based on themes by Manos Hatzidakis . This was commissioned soon after the Festival's establishment on Naxos. Costas Cotsiolis is the founder and artistic director of the festival.
Theodore Panagopoulos has been the festival secretary since 1998.
Sophia Karavias has made a great contribution to the festivals' organization since its move to Naxos in 2006.
